Everything's fifteen
CD
When it comes to the psychic transportation of a live audience through mere vibrations of air molecules, nobody in the whole ‘New Zealand Freenoise Thing' comes within spitting distance of Sandoz Lab Technicians... and this beautiful live show (recorded in the cavernous dome of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery) comes with free tickets to ride that bus. Discovering the most delicate balance between being sophisticated musical shapeshifters and plonking primevil troglodytes, ‘Everything's Fifteen' catches Sandoz in their finest form... filling the room with billowing swuzz and then barely resurfacing from their own haze to chase another clarinet out of their case and into your wide-awake dream. Lay back, let go, fly home.

An interesting 20 minute long collage piece, created using cut up recordings of various media weather reports, along with raw sound recordings made my floating recording devices into the air using weather balloons. A collection of compilation tracks, pieces only originally available on vinyl, and new and exclusive material from one of the scene's best selling, darkest sonic scientists. |
On this, their fifth album, SCHLOSS TEGAL explore the realms of the dead, within the phenomena known as evp (electronic voice phenomena). Extreme dark ambient mixes effortlessly with 'dead voices on air' - voices that have been recorded by the band themselves, and with help from electronic voice phenomena specialist and mortician, EN LLEWELLYN. These voices claim to be the spirits of people who once lived on this planet. The concept of this album focuses totally on the world beyond our reality - a peek into areas of darkness populated by the dead. An enthralling and genuinely unique album.

D2 740m440
CD
Sechres Mound was a collaboration between Cédric Peyronnet (Toy Bizarre) and Cyril Herry (Lecanora, Ninth desert, Exotoendo founder member) which began in February 1995 following the discovery of an unused & monumental tanks unit. Each "D2 740m440" piece was improvised and recorded live on site without any external contribution or sound treatments. The aim was to exploit the sound potential of the place by using materials mainly found on the site and installations built inside one and only tank (no. D2 740m440). Sometimes new materials were brought in (PVC pipes, string, metal bar...) to try out the unique reverberation of this space. After a few weeks, the tank became a true research laboratory, full of various objects (iron and wood pieces, cables and nails). The purpose was to reveal the authentic sound identity of this place. Fusing its signature processed and distorted percussions with tape loops and strident electronics, "Frashogard" retains key aspects of the project's previous incarnations while incorporating its persian influences more visibly, as the focus shifts to the events in the last two decades which have shaped its inspirations and its existence. In sum, a soundtrack to military coups, rapid modernization, misguided faith, betrayals and ultimately rebirth. (Coup d'etat Communications)

Another German project dealing with language, poetry and sound is SEETYCA. They use their own orthography and publish lyrics and prose on their projects website. Seetyca’s musical interest lies more in creating "acoustic landscapes" or moods than in telling stories. They’re especially interested in unconscious archaic states of the mind. The two pieces on "The Lake" relate to a sacral approach of experiencing nature. When beautiful (classic?) samples are set into a sphere of extremely wide spaces and reverbation, when these clouds of sounds spread out in infinite refulgence, moving like slow surging billows, a point of utmost inner calmness can be reached. Exactly what you lost
CD
This first album of cross-hemisphere hum by Seht and Howard Stelzer emerged organically via tapes shared through the post between New Zealand and Boston over the course of a year or so. Without any spoken agenda or external organizing concept from the start, the music willed itself into a darkly psychedelic, implacably melancholy haze. A quick scramble of caffeinated tape action kicks things off, then the album rapidly dissipates into a thick, black sleep of environmental debris and humid fog. Worn loops were played into various outdoor acoustic environments (playgrounds, front porches, trees, other prosaic spots), then fed back into low-tech machines for further harmonic decay. Shapes form in the shadows and slip away as the edges blur. After a few attempts to heave itself up onto its feet, Exactly What You Lost eventually huffs its last breath and dissolves in a cavern of industrial tics. (Intransitive)

Since 1995 Shifts is one of the various projects of Frans de Waard. All of the work is based on guitar sounds. In the first phase various guitars were played with objects and effects, then, the next phase were computer treatments of the previous phase (the 'Vertonen' series, 22 pieces in total). After that a return to simplicity again; 'Branches' is one of three pieces ('trees' and 'leaves' to be released on LP by entr'acte) based on four stringed, detuned acoustic guitar and motor objects. Loud and drone this could have been a next step, but might very well the final works on Shifts. (Taalem)

CD
Sickness crafts his own brand of technical harsh, detail oriented blasts that cut and shatter. Movement, complexity, intensity; the defining elements of the Sickness sound. Singularly obsessed, Slogun IS true crime, violent and dirty. Constant abuse, shouted vocals, searing sound. Spectral Freight
CD
His first major release in over ten years, skozey fetisch's "spectral freight" utilizes a wide array of sound sources (analog synth, radio interference, feedback, deconstructed computer test tones, field recordings, even a reworked acapella performance) to create this recording. An interesting aspect of "spectral freight" is the diversity of sounds actually created from the same source--skozey (Mark C. Jackman) favors analog synth for more than half the tracks on the disc, with a handful actually being reworkings and processing of other tracks on the disc. Isolated, these tracks explore the vast possibilities of the instrument: intense yet subtle drones, sharp, brittle attacks of noise, whimsical snippets of electronic chaos, pulsating battles between frequencies. However, all tracks are equally at home on the disc; whether it's a field recording of a subway trip in Japan that blossoms into an electronic wash of sound before reaching its destination, or treated computer tones that make you feel like mechanical ferrets are playing tag in your inner ear, "spectral freight" is a cohesive and diverse display Jackman's talent, and a welcome release after a long silence. Spanning their very brief live career from 1998 - 2001, these two CDs convey all that was exciting, frustrating, ridiculous and ultimately nourishing about a Sonic Catering performance. CD1 begins at the beginning: w/ the first carrot chop at London's 333 nightclub, 27th September 1998 and ends at the end: Geneva's Moloko restaurant, 9th November 2001. In between lies a lean collage mix of culinary overdrive, assembled from every gig the project did capturing the various moods & atmospheres that were created during their live sets. Extracts of their 5 hour shift at The Moloko are manipulated and included between tracks 1,3,5 and capture/present a dense atmosphere at the restaurant. a cd giving you a great example of their sound, showing nearly all of the project's sides, full of various & bizarre moods & atmospheres, sometimes a bit rhythmic or others harsh or obscure. CD2 is the documentation of their last proper performance at geneva's forde gallery. An hour's recording full of meditative, abstract, spacious soundscapes. This is sonic catering bands definitive live document, minus the food of course. (Absurd)

This work is the by-product of the twisted imagination and ravings of a lunatic. That feeling of gritted teeth and gooseflesh that permeates from the thought of pristine controlled surgical torture. Indescribable atrocities are what fuel the concept here. This is in fact the soundtrack to a hellish word of nightmares only a few have been able to fathom. This is evil incarnate nothing honorable about it. From the screams echoed through time from the halls of Auschwitz to those atrocities of Unit 731. Steel Hook Prostheses attempts to unmask inhumanity at it's darkest most perverse hour. Metal tin box with 2 B&W postcards. (Nil by Mouth)

A document of transforming the character of a cultural commodity into sound, and via decomposition and manipulation giving it an entirely new structure and meaning. Acoustic signatures collected from railway stations shift into soundworks bearing the fluency and dynamics of the sound sources, yet presenting them in the form of harsh ambiance often taking an overwhelming approach by piercing all senses with all-engulfing frequencies. These 8 new pieces belong to the series | |
