While Marchetti is known for his two 3"mini-CDs on the Metamkine label and his excellent split CD with Ralf Wehowsky on Selektion, "Knud" is the first full-length work published under his own name. MEM
It was a very good year
CD
Mem is one Kamil Antosiewicz from Warsaw. Kamil existed in a previous incarnation as one third of the now defunct Polish trio, EA. Mem’s work typically attempts to link sonic anomalies with electronics. On “It Was A Very Good Year”, Mem takes source material from perhaps the most popular version of a standard American classic of the same title from the early 1960’s. Mem uses isolated sections of string sounds from a big band orchestra and draws them out into slowly cascading layers. We hear humming, vibrating, drawn out drones that build very slowly into a massive crescendo of noise that eventually include others sounds from the orchestra. Many of the sounds are manipulated, but nothing outside the original recorded version is added. The piece results in a stunningly beautiful hour with hypnotic qualities that build in giant ebbs and flows. Recommended (Alluvial)

The face of Vehemence
CD
"My influence and inspiration for "The Face of Vehemence" is the book "Sun and Steel" by Yukio Mishma. The CD title "Face of Vehemence" is basically what I see in Yukio Mishimas face; especially on the book cover. Almost all of his photos he has that "face of vehemence". When I finally read his book "Sun and Steel" it was like a "take the words out outa my mouth" experience but articulated absolutely perfectly in a manner I could never do with words. How he perceived "words" in relating to the flesh is how I perceive "sound" in relating to the flesh. Yukio Mishmas attitude towards art/flesh/death/spirit is highly inspiring towards my music." - Daniel Menche (Ground fault)

Substantia Innominata is the brand new release-series from Drone Records. This new series doesn’t focus on a special concept or ideology regarding the music, but on a certain theme. Basically the grey matter (psychic or physical, which are bound to result the same) surrounding us / within us, but can’t be understood or recognized through the normal senses (though some may perceive it on a subconscious level). We could name it “The Unconscious”. DANIEL MENCHE begins the series with two pieces: Compressed energy. Density. Driving force. Tension. Pulsating Blood. The Unknown as part of a bigger energy, that is also part of the music? ltd. 500 (Substantia Innominata)

The Longest Lie
3xC40
A sort of best of, most tracks previously released, but worked over to varying degrees, as well as some new material. The sounds wander through a desolate and cold world, occupied by snippets of voices and other field recording manipulated via reel to reel tape, sterile sheets of white noise, and silence. (Black Horizons)

MNEM
for delta relics
CD
Audacious plunge into the undercurrent textures of sound overwhelming with archaic and primal influence yet appearing unprecedented and downright fresh in the present day. Finest sonic massives emitting complex syntheses of post industrial, electro-acoustics and harsh ambience; intensive layers of drones and abrasive loops laying foundation to diverse analog sound sculptures. Utilizing old reel-to-reel recorders and analog gadgets has given this Finnish duo an almost trademark sound, now presented on their first full length release with highly acclaimed vinyl releases already under their belts. Highly recommended

golyma
LP
Possibly the most interesting band on the Finnish scene today, Mnem offers high quality and most dynamic, flowing and layered harsh intensive treatments, derived from disturbing loops, swirling feedback, metal clanging, freaked-out bass frequencies - this baby's got it all! Still featuring that trademark reel-to-reel sound, perhaps only a bit more straight to the point! If someone were to define what industrial muzak was all about, this would surely be among our suggestions. limited to 275 copies

MOLJEBKA PVLSE
Tamon
CD
This one-man-project from Stockholm, Sweden here stretches the boundaries of ambient drone-music. perhaps a surprising listen for those accustomed to his other recordings, as this work to a larger degree features a sound palette unarguably harsher than his others. Tons of frenzied, computerized, but crispy clear distortion flows out over you like an ice wall and leaves the listener in a nervous state, begging for a warming aftermath. Static walls of rampant treated guitars and billowing droney backgrounds screaming endlessly out over the cold plains of the earth.
$14
Lode Lvx
7"
"For some years now Stockholm based artist Mathias Josefson has delighted the drone scene with his highly minimal excursions into drone territory. From harsh noise to soft & gentle ambience the aim is to reach a basic level of sound conscience. In doing so the "human mind" and the "sound mind" interact to build a symbiotic entity. The two pieces "lode" and "lvx" are great examples of breathing drone structures which seem to be derived from real string or wind instruments. Harmonic & mysterious, dense & aspiring.... this is indeed music like a lode of illuminations (Drone records)

MONOLITH ZERO & NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER
SPLIT
CD
Monolith Zero’s world brings to mind dimly lit interiors, where small buzzes on the threshold of audibility threaten to erupt at any moment and the tiniest strands of sound carry an almost unbearable tension. Small movements carry great weight inside this space, where raw electricity is guided, channeled, and shaped, but never tamed. The music of Never Presence Forever is above all immersive. These wavering drones fused with fits of distortion suggest tortured conflict and cry out for volume. the everyday sounds of technology (the transformer hum in a vacant lot littered with refuse, a blast furnace echoing in a concrete stairwell) express ominous atmospheres. The tracks flow one into the next forming a coherent 20-minute piece that ranges from quiet, meditative low-end tones to shrieking metallic scrapes. (804 Noise)

MRTYU
Ornate Shroud
LP
An odd compound of Vedic imagery, metal misanthropy, and violin agony, this music moves away from any particular fan base in pursuit of its distant, darkened idols. Ornate Shroud is Mrtyu’s most potent spawn to date. Hewing closer to song form than previous releases, the album conceals Antony Milton’s violent guitar and violin work behind Mrtyu’s characteristic murk. Its pieces transition from jagged riffs to eerie ambient scrapes through wooly feedback, approaching the uncanny. (Tipped Bowler tapes)

In their homes and in their heads
7"
The man behind MURMER is the US-American field recording specialist PATRICK MCGINLEY (who lives in France now), who’s also responsible for the great 'Framework' radio programme on London’s RESONANCE 104.4FM. The two pieces on this "Drone" captivate the listener with intelligently assembled and multi-layered recordings of a garden in London (i.e. tree bark, water, footsteps, a creaking gate), processer and ventilation sounds of an old computer, and beads of a broken necklace. All sounds were left un-processed. Combined, they take you on a trip into an other world of low drones and high-pitched noises, crunching and gritting microsounds, surprising cut-ups, all very near and clear. (Drone records)

Wonders never cease
CD
Four years in the making, the music of Brendan Murray’s latest/greatest album of cinematic drone anthems, Wonders Never Cease, was honed during live concerts around New York and New England. Recorded in situ, each track was painstakingly (re)assembled and embellished back at Murray’s studio. While it cannot accurately be called a ‘live album’, the adrenaline thrill of live performance is palpable as soon as the opening howl charges out from the speakers. From the laminal scorch of the opening track, through an electric fizz storm and a breathy hymn for what sounds like harmonica and folding chairs (?), the eyes-wide-open bliss of Wonders is exhilarating. Soulful, melodic and intimate, this is electro-acoustic music as gloriously life-affirming and natural as a sunrise. (Intransitive)

MYSTERIAN
A rose for the Dying
CD
melancholic dark folk, side-project by PROFANE GRACE, released on the Italian Memento Mori label. Mysterian is an isolated endeavor that conjures romantic images of the ancient past and the secret mysteries of sorrow. Cascading sounds of the netherworld collide with the subtle beauty of divine darkness as subtle keyboard passages carry the listener into a hallowed world of despair and depression. Cold in concept, Mysterian offers a style to be appreciated by those owning a kinship with the darker qualities of life.
