Neil Campbell & Campbell Kneale

CD
Two guys who lived in the same street, in the same suburb, on different sides of the globe fiddle about with each others unfinished tapes for about three years and pop out an ambitious collection of multiple-fidelity drone, shimmer & tinkle, and stereo carnage that easily ranks with the best that either of the participants have created on their own. Its pretty clear that the universe has pre-ordained this pairing of souls since the dawn of time, and smiled kindly upon their meager efforts to entertain and amuse the record buying public. Come, partake of their impressive Feng Shui.

CISFINITUM
Bezdna
CD
New album of Moscow-based project Cisfinitum is the experiment in more emotional rather than in musical domain. Deep and profound, it's touching the most dark corners of human soul and takes it to the imaginary otherworlds. This peculiar quality of Cisfinitum music is achieved through extensive use of soviet analogue synthesizers, but the spiritual beauty of "Bezdna" is also created by violin and omnipresent voices. Psychoactive dark ambient combined with melodic incantations. (Monochrome Vision)

JODA CLEMENT
Movement + Rest
CD
"Movement + Rest is the result of two years work listening, collecting and arranging sound. My recordings attempt to blur the distinction between electronic, acoustic and ambient sources. Analog or acoustic instruments are used because of the direct physical process with which they generate sound. I take field recordings from sounds that habitually go unnoticed in the daily environment (airplanes overhead, trains passing in the night, the broken radiator at the end of the hall, falling snow), as well as those which are less accessible for hearing (the abandoned subway tunnels of Toronto, a muffled cab ride through Guadalajara, contact mics on Jacques Cartier Bridge, etc.). I combine nondescript omnipresent noises that surround us with instrumental and vocal recordings to create a landscape of sounds that unites the properties of both musical and everyday contexts". -JODA CLÉMENT
$ 8

CLIMAX DENIAL
Ritual Smothering
7"
Climax Denial. It began in the basement. Ammonia burn. Moonwalker legions. A 90-minute drive. Frequency. Inevitability. Finality. Steeped in cult teen and fetish sites. Soaked in true industrial history - local, regional, and international. Claiming his low-fidelity birthright, which is both passive and aggressive. Two tracks of dark and ugly electronics, heightened by the opportunity for emotional intimacy, as promised by the sexual come-ons derived from desolate telephone answering services. (Bloodlust!)
$ 6

NELS CLINE & DEVIN SARNO
Buried on Bunker HIll
CD
Guitarist NELS CLINE and bassist DEVIN SARNO have been playing together for almost 10 years, and this is their first multitrack recording (their past collaborations have been live). With a focus on improvisation and texture, Buried on Bunker Hill rumbles thick, low and foggy, as Cline's detuned and bent guitar mechanics gravitate, distort, meander and hover. (ground fault)

Painful and straight forward power electronics with vocals. 2nd part of disc is studio recordings and this electronic-genius who is also know from Strom.ec, knows how to make analogue synthesizers and other tools sound even personal with his trademark style. Very stylish designed artwork in cardboardbox cover with 4 insertcard full of nice graphics and texts. (Freak Animal)

CLOSING THE ETERNITY
Northern Lights Ambience
7"
Closing the Eternity is a Siberian 'cosmic drone' project from Ekaterinburg. The first vinyl release shows CTE using original 'northern lights soundings' together with synths, implementing very cosmic soundwaves with electronic whirs, sinus-tones and small raspy crater-landscapes inside. There's a drift towards objectlessness and dissolution in these sounds where they undergo into non-existence or is it transformation into a higher existing form? This is the perfect soundtrack to the 'red dawn of the north'. (Drone Records)

Desperate attempts at Beauty : Conceptual and research exercises
CD
A long awaited full-length solo from Joe Colley (Crawl Unit). This ambitious project documents sonic phenomena discoveries both mental and physical, with or without alteration. Also features a gathering of text that is, simply put: pure nihilism. The sound piece was sampled and composed from organic phenomena and artificial electronic noises. The uneasy coexistence of cracking ice, disintegrating clay and unstable systems of combined electronic devices 'could be seen as a manifestation of the schizophrenia that is crucial to the survival of the modern individual'. (auscultare)
$12
NO
7"
This is a document of an installation piece involving two loops running modified courses on two reel to reels; while the loops warble pleasantly in and out of synch, the sounds of the machines alone will give you a delectable claustrophobia, making you feel at home in a barn full of slowly ailing mechanical bulls. Hand signed edition of 233 copies. (Crippled Intellect Publications)
$ 5
Playback System (for Johnny Stewart)
One-Sided 7"
Cassettes of animal distress cries purchased from the vast catalog produced by the Johnny Stewart company are presented on a table with three cassette decks. The output is sent to an array of sculptural forms spread across the gallery floor. Visitors are free to select and change the tapes being played. The forms act as surrogates for the disembodied animals in distress, emitting the growls of predators and their prey recorded in the field at various times from the 1970s to the present. The forms have no eyes, only mouths whose hollowness filters the screaming frequencies and repetitions, broadcasting polyrhythms of sustained fear. Implanted speakers become replacement voiceboxes for these creatures relocated to ‘civilization’, among human animals. In the process of capture, control, and taming of this pure fear, wildness is removed ever further from the wild – first by the initial recording, and then by playback into manmade space. (Little Enjoyer)

Hive
3" CD
I grew up with the sound of bees, my father was an amateur beekeeper. It is an amazingly complex but also simple sound, full of warmth, comfort, but also menace-the drone of many tiny legs and wings. My father's hives were wiped out by a virus before I could make a recording, but I found someone willing to let me visit them in the hills of California. I made recordings from the outside and inside, embedding microphones among the active bees and positioning them at the entrances to the hives. It took me some years to arrive at an idea of how to use this material in a respectful way. The sound itself is so beautiful in it's monotony. I could listen to it forever. But i took it as a challenge to examine my relationship to this sound, to view it from several angles including raw unprocessed recordings as well as playback through cymbals and analog synthesizer. I hope somehow it shows my perception of the overlap between our current electronic reality and one of the most elemental sounds on earth. - Joe Colley (Ferns recordings)

COLUMN ONE
World Transmissions 3 and 4
2xLP
These two LPs are a document about the state of the German band Column One at the time these recording were made. Recorded in 1994, World transmission 3 is an attempt at trying to translate the architecture of a church into sounds. To do so, members of Column One arranged three microphones in this church, and played various acoustic instruments at several locations inside the building. These two tracks are supposed to render the "aura" of the church and get their character from this very architecture. Music-wise, here are two very calm and acoustic sounding track, with a lot of uncommon instruments (harmonium, whistles, wood organ) being used. World transmission 4 is a reworked version of a concert given in 1998, during which a lot of ethnic field recordings were used, as well as some traditional percussion's, the whole thing being run through tape effects. Once again, all heavily mixed afterwards. The results are a very different musical listen then the previous LP, with a very ritualistic feel to it. A nice document at the wide variety of sounds Column one can produce, and Beautifully packaged in a fold out sleeve.

3" CD
tom cox is best known for his sound explorations under the moniker 'tac'. "tac was started in 1984 with the intent of investigating experimental forms of creative expression". his early work relied heavily on the use of analog gear (4-track, tapes, cheap microphones) while his recent work utilizes digital technology. this release is a perfect combination of the two; "stint" combines analog and digital methods of collecting and editing to create a precise, yet still crude composition that demands close listening.
